Adding up the crime figures for this area we have a total of 41 reported crimes from Jan to Dec 2011. The hot months being May and September.
Interestingly the total figure given by the police is 24, which is stated to be average for our population. If the 41 figure is correct then we are actually above average. We have asked the police to explain the figures and will publish their response.

Phone scam update.

In response to our complaint about calls claiming to be Mears & Mosses asking rather personal question over the phone we had the following email from M&M:

Thank you very much for your email of the 19th January, which I received today Friday 20^th January, regarding a concern about telephone calls to our tenants within the SY12 9NA area.

I would like to reassure your local Neighbourhood Watch that the calls are genuine. They are calls from Meres & Mosses Housing Association to all of our tenants. We are conducting a census with all our residents to ensure that the information we hold on our system is correct, up-to-date and complete, to ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act. This is enabling us to confirm who is living in our properties.

On behalf of Meres & Mosses Housing Association, I apologise if anyone has been distressed as a result of this exercise.

The script we are following outlines to the tenant that they are under no obligation to disclose any information, and that all questions are optional. We also make it clear to the tenant that, if they wish, we can issue a postal copy to them. This then enables them to choose whether or not to complete or return the information.

I am also copying this to the Ellesmere police for their information.

In reply we suggested that M&M should suggest that tennants should call them back on their freephone number 0800 4346289 if they have any concerns about giving personal information over the phone.

Scam phone calls.

Consumers are being targeted by telephone scammers claiming to be from the government, the Office of Fair Trading, a high street bank or a legitimate claims management company. The fraudsters suggest that the consumer could receive payments, for example the repayment of bank charges or other debts.

A recent possible example is a series of phone calls claiming to be from Mears & Mosses Housing association made to elderly people on Hill Park asking for personnel information over the phone.

We have brought this to the attention of the police and Mears & Mosses. Even if these calls are genuine they are not acceptable practice.

If it is not an emergency

101 is the new number to call when you want to speak to your local police to report less urgent crime and disorder and for general police enquiries. For example:

if your car has been stolen;
if your property has been damaged;
when you suspect drug use or drug dealing;
to report a minor traffic collision;
to give police information about crime in your area.

In an emergency

In an emergency, always call 999. An emergency is when:

there is danger to life or risk of injury;
a crime is in progress and the offender is still at the scene or has only just left;
immediate police attendance is necessary, such as when a crime is obviously about to be committed.

Across the European Union countries you can also call 112 to contact police in an emergency.

If you are deaf or hard of hearing, or have a speech impediment which means you are unable to make voice calls, you can now contact the police in a number of ways:

Anti Social behaviour on Hill Park-Latest police figures.

Looking at the September police crime map it is evident that anti social behaviour is on the increase on Hill Park.
Hill Crescent having it`s second incident in two consecutive months.

The good news is that Meres and Mosses and the police are now starting to take this matter seriously.

Anti-social behaviour is the term used to describe actions or behaviour that cause damage or affect the quality of life of people in a community. Common examples include vandalism, graffiti, intimidation and nuisance neighbours.
Reducing anti-social behaviour is a high priority for West Mercia Police. Our aim is to raise awareness of the impact it can have on other people and encourage communities to respect and tolerate each other.
Local policing teams across the force work hard with partners such as local councils, housing associations and schools on a wide range of initiatives designed to reduce anti-social behaviour, particularly among young people.
Youth engagement activities have included organised football and tag rugby sessions, fishing, rafting and canoeing and the setting up of new youth clubs.
In return, young people have become more involved with their communities, taking part in litter picks, cleaning graffiti off fences and buildings, planting bulbs and shrubs and helping out at old people's homes.

Hill Park Crime Wave.

Looking at the local police website crime figures it would seem that Hill Park has had a minor crime wave in September.

With six incidents on the estate plus three more nearby.

It looks as though Octobers figures are not any better.

As our figures are about 25% of Ellesmere's crime numbers it may be time that we had 25% of the police presence.

Distraction Burglaries.

A recent distraction burglary in the village highlights the need to check callers identity before letting them into your home.

When confronted by a suspicious caller do not let them enter your home until you have checked with their office. Just asking for a contact number and getting them to wait will spook most dodgy callers.

Remember it is better to send a genuine caller away than to let a crook into your home.

Meres and Mosses Complaints Procedure

As Meres and Mosses are the principle provider of social housing in the village we thought it worth while using their procedure as an example of how to complain about the behaviour of a tenant.

In general Housing Associations can run their procedures as they wish as long as the procedure is easily understandable.

The first port of call is the associations head office were an official complaint should be made, if possible in writing or by email. Verbal complaints over the phone tend to be treated with less urgency.

You should receive a letter with an incident number within a week, it should contain information on how the matter will be dealt with and by whom.

It is important to hold the association to it`s stated intentions so keep a record of what actually happens.

At the end of the investigation you will be told the outcome, if you disagree with this you have the right to take your complaint to the chief executive of the association.

In the event that you are still dissatisfied with the outcome you can complain to the Housing Ombusdman Service.

Meres & Mosses to investigate drug abuse on Hill Park.

Following complaints of increased drug abuse on Hill Park Meres & Mosses are to start an investigation next week.

Anyone wishing to give evidence or state an opinion is welcome to do so by either getting in touch with Meres & Mosses directly or via this site.

Theft from gardens.

Over the past few months there have been incidents of the theft of garden ornaments and plants on the Hill Park estate.

Up to now most thefts have been from front gardens, however some are from rear gardens.

The latest loss that has been mentioned to us involved the loss of three plants from a garden shed in Hill crescent.

We have asked the police to step up patrols of this area and would urge residents to report all incidents as the police will only act if the loss is reported by phone or email.

Over the next few weeks we will be publishing information on how to access information and assistance to help local citizens fight crime and anti social behaviour.

We will also provide advice on accessing local government services.

Later in the month we should be in a position to distribute information cards with our contact details. We are waiting for Meres and Mosses to provide these plus other promotional assistance.

We are also in contact with our local police, now based at Oswestry, and hope to encourage them to remember where we are.

As this neighborhood watch scheme is internet based please inform as many of your friends and neighbors without access to the web as possible.

When fully functional you will be able to post, anonymously, details of suspicious behavior. We will keep a log of these reports to help build up a picture of local crime and pass it on to the police periodically.
